Angliana frustrates Evening Attire in Aqueduct Handicap!
Angliana defeated the ten-year-old sensation Evening Attire and the Canadian champ Judiths Wild Rush to capture the $81,600 Aqueduct Handicap on Saturday at Aqueduct racecourse.
At the start, Angliana was in third under jockey Alan Garcia as Judiths Wild Rush pressed Pink Viper through swift early fractions of :23.19 and :46.84 through a half-mile.
The highly-heralded Evening Attire broke slowly and raced in sixth, more than ten lengths back. As Judiths Wild Rush dispatched tiring Pink Viper after six furlongs, Angliana eagerly responded to Garcia's cue and drew within a half-length of that foe in early stretch.
Determined Angliana wore down Judiths Wild Rush in the final furlong and held off fast-closing Grade 1 winner Evening Attire to prevail in 1:43.25 for 1 1/16 miles on a track rated as fast.
Evening Attire came in second while Judiths Wild Rush came in third.
Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, Angliana placed second in last year's Aqueduct Handicap. He entered of a runner-up finish in a one-mile allowance/optional claiming race on January 1 at Philadelphia Park , his first start after an extended layoff due to a sinus cyst.
Angliana increased his earnings to $286,842.
