Kip Deville wins Poker Handicap!
Kip Deville was victorious in the $106,300 Poker Handicap at Belmont Park racecourse on Sunday, July 13, 2008. Kip Deville finished the mile-long race in 1:32.94 on firm grass against four rivals as the 2-5 favorite.
Kip Deville was quite confident in toying with the competition early before pulling away for a 2¾-length victory. Under the direction of jockey Cornelio Velasquez, Kip Deville actually traded the lead position with Sensational Humor throughout the Poker Handicap race but he was able to pull away in the stretch with minimal effort, enroute to a win.
The winner of last fall's Breeders' Cup Mile thus extended his winning streak to three races. Trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. used the Poker Handicap as a preparatory race to keep Kip Deville in shape and ready for a Breeders' Cup defense at Santa Anita racecourse in October.
Kip Deville paid $2.80, $2.20 and $2.10 for his Poker Handicap victory. Tam Lin returned $2.90 and $2.10. Operation Red Dawn earned $2.30 to show. |
