Lucky Island wins Tom Fool Handicap!
Lucky Island captured the $161,000 Tom Fool Handicap on the 4th of July at Belmont Park racecourse. Lucky Island tackled the seven furlong race in 1:22.73.
Lucky Island seized the lead coming out of the starting gate at Belmont Park racecourse, blazed the racecourse with smashing speed, and emerged victorious with a 4¼-length lead over the second-placer.
The Tom Fool Handicap was the fourth consecutive triumph for the 4-year-old Argentine-bred Lucky Island.
Lucky Island hasn't had a taste of defeat so far this year.
Lucky Island paid $5.00, $2.80, and $2.20 for his Tom Fool Handicap triumph. Favorite Tasteyville returned $2.50 and $2.10 for second-place and Premium Wine paid $2.20 to show. Starforaday and Council Member were next in the order of finish.
Jockey Alan Garcia was gushing for Lucky Island after the race. “My horse was so sharp, and he broke so good. I had a ton of horse all the way around. When I asked him at the end, he acted like the race was just starting again. I was so confident with him. He had a little adjusting to do from Argentina, but now he loves it here.”
Lucky Island's trainer Kiaran McLaughlin attributed Lucky Island 's win to his sharp start.
According to his connections, Lucky Island will next set his sights on the seven-furlong Forego Handicap (gr. I) at Saratoga racecourse on Aug. 30.
