Under the direction of jockey Kent Desormeaux, Thorn Song led at the start while Faith's Magic dueled with him. Thorn Song nevertheless ruled the pace of the race.

Thorn Song, carrying 118, paid $5.60 and $2.20 for his 4 th of July win at Churchill Downs racecourse. Einstein returned $2.10. There was no show wagering.
He earned $135,780 for his Firecracker Handicap triumph, his sixth in 19 lifetime starts. The win upped Thorn Song's career bankroll to $517,981. |
