Madeo stages an upset in Del Mar Derby!
Madeo staged an upset on Sunday ( 31 August 2008 ) at Del Mar racecourse when he emerged on top in the final stages of of the $350,000 Del Mar Derby to win the contest before about 19,700 fans. Madeo accomplished the assignment in a quick time of 1:46.68
Under the direction of jockey Mike Smith, Madeo gamely faced the challenges of the nine-furlong race. He settled comfortably near the front as Tangled Tango set the pace in the early stages of the game. In the final sixteenth, Madeo made his move and seized the lead.
The favored invader from the East, Gio Ponti (ridden by Garrett Gomez), put on some speed late in the game but was repulsed by Madeo. Madeo came in ½-length ahead of Gio Ponti. Tangled Tango came in third while Nownownow was fourth.
Madeo paid $23.60, $7.20 and $6.20 for his Del Mar Derby win. Gio Ponti, winner of the Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs racecourse, returned $3.20 and $2.60. Tangled Tango paid $6.60 to show.
Madeo earned $210,000 in the Del Mar Derby. It was his third win in seven starts.
His career earnings have now been upped to $317,915. |
