Midshipman Wins Del Mar Futurity!
Midshipman captured the Grade I $250,000 Del Mar Futurity at Del Mar racecourse, providing a thrilling close to the 43-day 2008 summer season in the track where the turf meets the surf. The closing day crowd was estimated at 15,440.
Midshipman accomplished his Del Mar Futurity victory in a time of 1:23.35.
Under the direction of jockey Tyler Baze, Midshipman just settled off the pace in the early stages of the race. The early splits were recorded in :23 1/5 and :46 2/5.
Toward the middle stages, Midshipman closed gamely as he prepared for the stretch. Then, he let loose a deep rally in the final stages.
But an equally-determined Coronet of a Baron, piloted by Corey Nakatani, provided some stiff resistance, even holding a thin ½-length lead as they passed the 3/4 -mark in 1:23 1/5.
In the end, Midshipman was not to be denied his victory as reached the wire in first position. This was trainer Bob Baffert's first win in the Del Mar Futurity since 2002.
Coronet of a Baron came in second while Street Hero was ¾-length behind in third spot. The favorite Southern Exchange came in fourth.
Believe in Hope, Escalon, Wild Wild Posse, Kerwin's Way, Kelly Leak and Mensa Heat rounded out the order of finish.
Midshipman paid $14.60, $8.60 and $5.60 for his Del Mar racecourse win. Coronet of a Baron returned $8.40 and $5.60, while Street Hero paid $5.20 to show. |
