Colonel John aims to make it big in Swaps Breeders Cup Stakes!
Colonel John has set his sights toward the Grade II, $350,000 Swaps Breeders Cup Stakes at Hollywood Park racecourse on July 12.
Colonel John ran sixth after a poor start in the 2008 edition of the Kentucky Derby. He now aims to redeem himself at the Swaps Breeders Cup Stakes.
Colonel John is a son of Tiznow and heads a field of six for the 1 1/8-mile test for 3-year-olds over the Hollywood Park racecourse Cushion Track.
Jockey Garrett Gomez will be astride Colonel John at the Hollywood Park racecourse extravaganza.
The speedy Two Step Salsa, a two-time grade III winner at the meeting, is touted to be Colonel John's main opponent at the Swaps Breeders Cup Stakes.
Colonel John won the Santa Anita Derby on April 5 and was hobbled with tough luck in the Kentucky Derby on May 3 at Churchill Downs racecourse, as he came in more than 14 lengths behind the victorious Big Brown.
Colonel John worked five furlongs in :59 2/5 at Santa Anita racecourse on July 9 in preparation for his first start since that effort.
"I gave him a little time off after that," said trainer Eoin Harty July 9 from his Santa Anita base. "He had a very rough trip. He looks fantastic now, and I couldn't be happier. I think he's coming into this race as good as he was coming into the Santa Anita Derby."
Colonel John is a winner of four of seven starts and has so far banked $825,300 in his entire career. Colonel John is quite accustomed to the Hollywood Park racecourse Cushion Track where he won the 1 1/16-mile Real Quiet Stakes by three lengths in his stakes debut in November.
All of Colonel John's starts have been on synthetic tracks except for the Kentucky Derby.
