Mast Track wins Hollywood Gold Cup!
Mast Track captured the $750,000 Grade I Hollywood Gold Cup on Saturday at Hollywood Park racecourse before a crowd stunned by the tenacious performance of this longshot.
Jockey Tyler Baze was astride Mast Track when the horse ran the 1¼-mile Hollywood Park racecourse extravaganza in 2:01.37.
Baze was scheduled to ride three-time Gold Cup winner Lava Man for this year's running. But when Lava Man was pulled-out prior to entries being taken, Baze ended up with longshot Mast Track. The combination turned out to be deadly as Baze utilized front-running tactics on Mast Track to win the Hollywood Gold Cup.
Mast Track owner, breeder and trainer Bobby Frankel decided to gave back the blinkers to Mast Track for the Hollywood Gold Cup. The decision apparently contributed to the win.
Mast Track triumphed by more than two lengths at Hollywood Park racecourse. He set quarter-mile fractions of :24.41 and :48.88 for the first half-mile. Mast Track never appeared to be under threat during the entire race. Student Council and McCann's Mojave were not factors on the final turn as Mast Track still ended up in control in the endgame.
Go Between, under the direction of Garrett Gomez, had a spirited effort down the lane but it was all for naught as he ended up second. Student Council came in third while McCann's Mojave came in fourth. Mast Track paid $23.60, $11.20 and $7.40 for his Hollywood Park racecourse romp on Saturday. Go Between returned $3.40 and $3, while Student Council paid $4 to show.
Tiago, who in the absence of the scratched Heatseeker was the horse most were looking out for, did not deliver.
Heatseeker was scratched due to being declared a day earlier with an ankle problem.
Mast Track's win at Hollywood Park racecourse on Saturday was worth $450,000 and his earnings have now pushed $614,622. |
