Tres Borrachos upsets in Swaps Stakes!
Tres Borrachos captured the Grade II, $355,495 Swaps Stakes on July 12 at Hollywood Park racecourse, and in the process staged a staggering upset against favored Colonel John and Two Step Salsa.
With two scratches prior to the race, just four 3-year-olds contested the 1 1/8-mile Cushion Track event at Hollywood Park racecourse.
Jockey Tyler Baze steadily positioned Tres Borrachos off the leaders soon after breaking in front from the rail post, allowing Two Step Salsa to set a brisk pace while stalking from the inside.
The 3-5 favorite Colonel John grilled the pacesetter on the outside but he didn't have enough power to keep up the challenge. As Two Step Salsa and Colonel John battled for the lead while racing through the homestretch, Tres Borrachos rallied impressively through an opening on the inside as he swooped to a 1¼-length win at the Hollywood Park racecourse Cushion. Tres Borrachos' final time was 1:49.29.
"This horse ran a monster race," said Tyler Baze, all smiles after also winning the Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I) June 28 aboard the outsider Mast Track. "Won the Gold Cup, got married, won the Swaps! It couldn't be better."
Heading into the Swaps, Tres Borrachos had just a maiden win in his nine-race career while making a couple of stops on the Triple Crown trail this spring.
Tres Borrachos earned $217,650 for the victory. Nownownow and Trevor's Clever scratched. |
