All reports coming out of the camp of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Barbaro continue to be positive as trainer Michael Matz was pleased with the him following a trip to the track at the Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton , Maryland , on Friday.
Matz said that Barbaro jogged a mile and galloped a mile and a quarter over the wood chips surface at Fair Hill. "He's doing terrific."
Matz has yet to finalize travel plans for Barbaro, who will be shipped from Fair Hill to Pimlico Race Course in the days leading up to the second jewel of the Triple Crown.
Kentucky Derby favorite Sweetnorthernsaint, who loomed boldly on the final turn before fading to finish seventh, jogged one mile and galloped one mile at Laurel Park under exercise rider Ernesto Ferdinand.
"Preparing for the Preakness Stakes is much easier than the Derby ," said Michael Trombetta, who trains the Sweetsouthernsaint gelding for owners Joseph Balsamo and Ted Theos. "If my horse was doing well, I always anticipated on running him here as long as he shows to me that he belongs at this level. I was very confident with his middle move down the backside that he does belong with this type of horse."
Trombetta, a native of Maryland , plans to ship the Illinois Derby (G2) winner to Pimlico on the morning of the Preakness Stakes.
Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Brother Derek walked under tack at Churchill Downs on Friday and is scheduled to be shipped to Baltimore on Tuesday.
Racing Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito said that Hemingway's Key , a late addition to the list of Preakness Stakes contenders, will also leave for Baltimore on Tuesday.
Trainer Bob Baffert is expected to decide on Monday if he will enter Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) winner Bob and John or Santa Anita Derby runner-up Point Determined in the Preakness Stakes.
Arkansas Derby (G2) winner Lawyer Ron returned to his stall at Churchill Downs Friday after successful surgery to remove bone chips at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington . Equine surgeon Larry Bramlageremoved small chips from his right front and right hind legs.
"They were possibly affecting his performance, but now that they are removed are no factor in the rest of his career," Bramlage said.
