Sky Cape wins Sand Trap!
Sky Cape captured the $55,472 Sand Trap, an optional claimer for 3-year-olds at 6½ furlongs, on Thursday at Santa Anita Racecourse's hillside turf course.
Sky Cape was the afternoon favorite and did not disappoint the crowd. Under the direction of jockey Corey Nakatani, Sky Cape outlasted pacesetter Gone Grand turning into the stretch and drew off under a vigorous hand ride.
Belafonte, ridden by Michael Baze, rallied for the place, one-half length ahead of stablemate Liberian Freighter with Joe Talamo aboard.
Sky Cape paid $4.80, $3 and $2.60 while Belafonte returned $7 and $4.80. Gone Grand paid $3.80 to show.
The Sand Trap was only the second career win in nine starts for the Kristin Mulhall trainee, who rose directly into the stakes ranks after a winning debut at Hollywood Park last May. The victory came in his third start on turf after a pair of seconds. The winning purse of $31,200 boosted the chestnut colt's career earnings to $115,300 for the partnership of Blue, Taub and Visionary Racing. |
