Lawyer Ron to make big stand at Woodward Stakes!
Lawyer Ron will make a determined stand against seven others in Saturday's 54 th running of the Grade 1, $500,000 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga racecourse. The Woodward Stakes will be run at nine furlongs and will be run as race 10 (5:49 p.m.) on an 11-race card.
Trainer Todd Pletcher believes Lawyer Ron will show stuff that will built up his stature as one of the top handicap horses in the country.
Five weeks ago at Saratoga Race Course, not only did Lawyer Ron earn an automatic bid for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Monmouth Park on October 27 by winning the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap, he established a track record of 1:46.64 for a mile and an eighth.
That mark surpassed Tri Jet's time of 1:47 in 1974, which was later equaled by the Pletcher-trained Left Bank, who ran the 2002 Whitney Handicap in 1:47.04.
Since the Whitney, Lawyer Ron has been showing off his speed in morning workouts, including a five-furlong move in 59.68 seconds over the main track. One of Pletcher's goals is to have the 4-year-old relax.
"We've been focused on getting him to relax," Pletcher said. "I haven't been too concerned on how fast or slow he goes, but the fashion in which he does it. He can still be very headstrong. He's a talented horse, and if you're not careful, he'll go too fast."
Along with Lawyer Ron's willingness in the morning, Pletcher is slightly concerned that Lawyer Ron will "bounce" off his race in the Whitney. |
