Spinaway to be a highlight of Saratoga closing weekend!
On Sunday, the 116 th running of the Grade 1, $250,000 Spinaway will be held at a distance of seven furlongs at Saratoga racecourse for the best two-year-old fillies.
The favorite in the Spinaway is Irish Smoke. It will be her second career start.
In her five-furlong debut on August 2nd, Irish Smoke Glacken filly sat a couple of lengths off the early lead and finished with plenty left, beating next-out maiden winner Syriana's Song by more than two lengths.
"She worked well Monday and she is in good form, but this will not be an easy race," Biancone said.
Everyone else in the Spinaway has more racing experience than Irish Smoke, with the exception of Morakami, who also is going into this Grade 1 off a maiden win.
The top three finishers from the August 15th Grade 2 Adirondack will be back for the Spinaway, including winner More Happy.
Setting the pace in the Adirondack , More Happy held a 4½-length lead in mindstretch, but seemed to tire late and only held on by three-quarters of a length over A to the Croft who will also be in the Spinaway.
Passion, the third-place finisher from the Adirondack , also recovered from a bump at the start to rally nicely. Trainer Todd Pletcher will be seeking his fourth Spinaway win with Passion, as will owner Michael Tabor, who is partners in the Came Home filly with Derrick Smith and Mrs. John Magnier.
Phantom Income, the second choice in the Adirondack , reared at the start and was declared a non-starter by the stewards after she was beaten 22 lengths. She broke her maiden by 10 ¼ lengths at Belmont and her connections will be looking forward to see what she can do in a stakes race with a fair start.
Heiligbrodt Racing Stable will be seeking its third Spinaway victory when trainer Steve Asmussen sends out Blitzing Sunday. The Montbrook filly came up a neck short of winning the Schuylerville here Opening Day with a third-place effort.
Asmussen won the 2001 Spinaway for Heiligbrodt with Cashier's Dream and his assistant, Scott Blasi, won with Appealing Zophie for Heilgbrodt last year while Asmussen served a suspension. |
