Mani Bhavan wins Spinaway Stakes!
Mani Bhavan captured the Grade I, $250,000 Spinaway Stakes on Sunday ( 31 August 2008 ) at Saratoga racecourse. Mani Bhavan accomplished her task in a time of 1:25.23 in a racecourse rated fast.
Her victory in the Spinaway Stakes earned $150,000 for her and has upped her career earnings to $264,000.
Under the tutelage of jockey Alan Garcia, unbeaten Mani Bhavan sprinted away to an early lead. Her role of early pacesetter was prodded by the challenges coming from both Casanova Move and Jardin.
Mani Bhavan registered fractions of :22.18 and :45.46. As she approached the mid-stretch, Jardin came in swinging but was comfortably repelled as they entered the final furlong. Mani Bhavan crossed the wire in easy fashion.
Jardin, ridden by Robby Albarado, settled for second, 5¼ lengths ahead of Collegiate, ridden by Edgar Prado. The remaining order of finish is as follows: Casanova Move, Winning Brew and August Rush.
Jockey Alan Garcia said Mani Bhavan was restless in the starting gate but came away swiftly at the start of the Spinaway Stakes.
"I wasn't nervous when I saw Jardin coming at us," he said. "I knew I still a lot of horse to keep going. When she was coming closer to us, my filly was trying hard. I didn't want to be too hard on her because I wanted to save her for the next race."
Mani Bhavan's trainer Steve Asmussen weighed in: "I thought she ran a beautiful race. Robby (Albarado) gave her a dream trip and finished second. It looked like Robby had a shot to get (Mani Bhavan), but she was getting tired."
Mani Bhavan paid $3.40, $2.50 and $2.10 for her Saratoga racecourse victory while Jardin returned $4 and $2.70. Collegiate paid $2.60 to show. |
