Septimus looks at Melbourne Cup contention!
Septimus of Ireland has emerged as a possible contender in Australia 's most famous horse race, the Melbourne Cup, after he won in the Group Three Curragh Cup.
Septimus' trainer Aidan O'Brien has indicated he is looking seriously at bringing his horse to Australia to compete at Flemington Racecourse in November.
O'Brien has said that he believes Septimus is an ideal type for the Melbourne Cup but says he is still learning more about Flemington Racecourse's marquee November event.
"You need a particular type of horse for the Cup," O'Brien said on Sydney radio last week.
"They need to be tough and they need to be fast stayers.
"We brought Mahler down thinking he was the right horse but he wasn't good enough."
The O'Brien-trained Mahler came in third in last year's Melbourne Cup with English horse Purple Moon second.
In 2006, O'Brien-trained and Ascot Gold Cup sensation Yeats was only seventh to Japanese horse Delta Blues.
O'Brien says he may still nominate Yeats for the Melbourne Cup this year but will not make a decision on which horses come until September.
Meanwhile, O'Brien has revealed that the Irish St Leger is next on Septimus' plate. |
