Captain Bax wins Missile Stakes decisively!
Captain Bax won the Group 3 Missile Stakes at 1,100 metres at Rosehill Racecourse on Saturday (2 August, 2008) in a decisive manner. The triumph could set Captain Bax on his way to the Melbourne spring.
Under the direction of jockey Tim Clark, the seven-year-old Captain Bax steadily raced in the mid-field while the favourite Keen Commander set the pace toward the straight. Captain Bax gradually found his way to the rail and sprinted his way to victory, overtaking the fading Keen Commander, Galaxy winner Typhoon Zed and Interfere along the way. Typhoon Zed came in ½ length behind Captain Bax while Interfere was ¾ length further away.
The favourite Keen Commander came in sixth position, 2½ lengths behind the winner.
Trainer Kris Lees was pleased with Captain Bax's performance and gave kudos to jockey Clark. "Tim rode him well, he had a good alley and everything worked out. We will have a look at him over the next few days but he may back up in the Premiere Stakes in a couple of weeks. Then I might freshen him up and look at the races in Melbourne . I've always thought he would be a good horse up the straight at Flemington."
Keen Commander's trainer Denise McGrath said her steed had simply run out of fitness and cited the Viscoride track at Warwick Farm Racecourse as a possible explanation.
"He just got tired," she said. |
