Sandown Racecourse: Melbourne racing in style!
Sandown Racecourse is a horse racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Sandown Racecourse is one of the four horse racing venues located in the area.
Sandown Racecourse is located 25 kilometres from the Central Business District of Melbourne, in the suburb of Springvale, City of Greater Dandenong. Sandown Racecourse also features a motor racing circuit on the outside of the racecourse, referred to as Sandown Raceway.
Operated by the Victoria Amateur Turf Club, Sandown Racecourse is the only metropolitan racecourse built in the 20th century.

The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival traditionally closes with the running of the Sandown Classic (formerly the Sandown Cup) and Sandown Guineas in November each year. Past winners of the race include Gunsynd, Arwon and Baghdad Note.
Sandown Racecourse Description
The Sandown Racecourse Lakeside course has a circumference of 1,857 metres and a home straight of 407 metres
The Sandown Racecourse Hillside course is 2,087 metres in circumference with a home straight of 491 metres.
Sandown Racecourse is a specialist track and as such, barriers are not that important as there is a good straight to get horses into a good position. Sandown Racecourse does not necessarily favour front runners as many such horses have been overcome by those coming from well back.
Sandown Racecourse History

In June 1965, Sandown Racecourse opened before a crowd of 52,000.

In 1997, a Quarantine Centre was established to cope with the increase in the number of overseas horses being attracted to the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

In October 2001, the Melbourne Racing Club commenced the redevelopment of Sandown Racecourse. This consisted of an additional 30 metre wide home turn and widening of the main straight from 30 to 45 metres, and widening of the turn out of the straight from 30 to 45 metres.

In January 2003, racing on the reconfigured courses commenced on 25th January 2003 with the number of meeting hosted at Sandown Racecourse being increased from 32 to 41 per season.
