Jiggs Coz wins Dominion Day Stakes!
Jiggs Coz captured the Grade 3, $200,000 Dominion Day Stakes at Woodbine Racecourse on Tuesday.
The Dominion Day Stakes features the top older horses at Woodbine Racecourse running at the 1¼ miles distance on the Main Track. It is the traditional stakes event on Canada Day at Woodbine Racecourse. This year, only 5 horses were entered but Sterwins' scratch in the morning narrowed the Dominion Day Stakes field to just 4, with Jiggs Coz, True Metropolitan, Bond Fire and Torquay all hungry for the run.
At the start of the Woodbine Racecourse race, Jiggs Coz was immediately sent to the head of the pack by jockey David Clark. Jiggs Coz set fractions of 24.76, 50.07, and 1:14.50 over the Woodbine Racecourse Polytrack and he held the lead by as much as 1½ lengths.

True Metropolitan, the 2-5 favorite, contested the second position with a tenacious Bond Fire. Torquay was well back of the pack in the early stages.
After a mile, jockey Jim McAleney conjured True Metropolitan to challenge Jiggs Coz for the lead. But jockey Clark commanded Jiggs Coz to open up and he responded well as he ran through the stretch all the way to a 2¾-length triumph over True Metropolitan in a time of 2:04.99.
Torquay managed a late surge and was a length back in third while Bond Fire faded in fourth position. |
