Not Bourbon wins Queen's Plate 2008!
Not Bourbon beat an exceptionally-strong charge from filly Ginger Brew to capture the $986,737, 2008 edition of the Queen's Plate by a head on Sunday at Woodbine Racecourse.
Not Bourbon's triumph thus gave trainer Roger Attfield his record-tying eighth victory in the Queen's Plate.
Under the direction of jockey Jono Jones, Not Bourbon cruised along in fourth place during the early stages of the Woodbine Racecourse extravaganza on the outside, letting D. Flutie set the pace while clicking off reasonable fractions of :23.40, :47.60 and 1:13.55. As the race reached its one-mile point in 1:39.30, the pacesetters ran out of steam and Not Bourbon, from four paths wide, seized the front. Not Bourbon drew clear by 1½ lengths mid-stretch but was promptly challenged by Javier Castellano-ridden Ginger Brew on the final turn.
The winner of the Woodbine Oaks did not succeed in ousting Not Bourbon from the lead as Not Bourbon claimed the Queen's Plate 2008. Solitaire came in third.

Thus, the top three betting choices in the 14-horse field at the Queen's Plate 2008 all came in the money. The final time was 2:03.59. Not Bourbon paid $11.30, $5.10 and $3.40 for his Woodbine Racecourse triumph, while Ginger Brew paid $3.80 and $3. Solitaire paid $2.90 to show.
After the Queen's Plate, the second leg of Canada's Triple Crown is the July 13 Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie Racecourse. The final race is the August 3 Breeders Stakes at Woodbine Racecourse. |
