Duke of Marmalade captured the Prince of Wales Stakes at Ascot Racecourse on Wednesday, as expected. Duke of Marmalade was the the even-money favourite for the 1 mile, 2 furlong race at Ascot Racecourse.
He orchestrated the victory by pulled ahead in the final furlong and overpowering Phoenix Tower by four lengths. Pipedreamer was a short-head behind Phoenix Tower in third.
Duke of Marmalade's triumph at Ascot Racecourse was thus another feather in the cap of the Aidan O'Brien-Johnny Murtagh partnership. They had teamed up a day earlier and produced the victory of Henrythenavigator in the St James's Palace Stakes and Haradasun in the Queen Anne Stakes.
"He's an unbelievable horse, he's the real deal," Duke of Marmalade's trainer O'Brien said. "He had pins in his legs last year and he had bad fractures in his legs after Goodwood as a 2-year-old. Last year we were never really able to train him as he was semi-lame all the time."
Murtagh won his third Group One race in two days at Ascot Racecourse with the Prince of Wales Stakes win. He was impressed with Duke of Marmalade.
"He's up there with the best horses I've ever ridden and today was the big target," Murtagh said. "He's been showing speed at home and I ride him in a lot of his work. As Aidan says, if we had five or six like him we'd be very happy."
O'Brien and Murtagh are now training their sights on a fourth Group One winner when Yeats aims for a treble in the Ascot Gold Cup.
