The National Hunt course at Newcastle Racecourse, on the other hand, is a galloping racecourse of about 1¾ th mile that has 11 individual fences. The home straight is quite prone to strong headwinds and can become a severe test of stamina in soft ground. The re-sited final fence now means that the steeplechase course has a very short run-in.

Newcastle Racecourse History

• In 1833, the first recorded Northumberland Plate was hosted at Town Moor. The first winner of the Plate was Tomboy.

• In 1882, the Northumberland Plate was first run at Gosforth Park with a new flat and chase course, new stand and stabling for 100 horses.

• For over 120 years, racing has continued at High Gosforth Park .

• In 1994, Newcastle Racecourse at Gosforth Park was purchased by Sir Stanley Clark's Northern Racing. Under his watch, Newcastle Racecourse has seen new facilities for Racegoers, new stands, parade ring and a straight mile flat racecourse built.
