Newcastle Racecourse: Glorious Home of the Northumberland Plate!
Newcastle Racecourse is a horse racecourse located at Gosforth Park near Newcastle, England.
Newcastle Racecourse hosts both flat and National Hunt racing. Newcastle Racecourse's marquee event is the Northumberland Plate held annually in June. Many consider the two-mile race to be one of the most competitive handicaps of the season.
Aside from the Northumberland Plate, the other notable flat races held at Newcastle Racecourse are the following:
- Beeswing Stakes
- Chipchase Stakes
The Fighting Fifth Hurdle is the significant jump racing event held at Newcastle Racecourse.
There are currently plans to invest £ 25-million in new hotel, golfing and caravanning facilities on the site adjacent to the Newcastle Racecourse.
Newcastle Racecourse Description
The flat racing circuit at Newcastle Racecourse is a left-handed triangle with a straight course for distances up to a mile. This racecourse complements the running styles of stayers as its bends are gentle and the galloping type of horse can really find his stride.
The National Hunt course at Newcastle Racecourse, on the other hand, is a galloping racecourse of about 1¾ th mile that has 11 individual fences. The home straight is quite prone to strong headwinds and can become a severe test of stamina in soft ground. The re-sited final fence now means that the steeplechase course has a very short run-in.
