Wincanton Racecourse is a thoroughbred horse racecourse located in Wincanton, Somerset, England. Wincanton Racecourse is famed for its friendly atmosphere and its superb facilities. In fact, Wincanton Racecourse has been voted 'Best Small Racecourse in the South West' for 12 successive years by the Racegoers' Club.

Wincanton Racecourse History

In the 19 th Century, Wincanton is believed to have hosted the first-ever steeplechase.

In 1913, the Wincanton Race Company was formed. Racing commenced.

In 1920, horse racing was resumed after being suspended for World War I.

In 1925, the racecourse moved to its current site at Kingwell Farm.

In 1927, the inaugural meeting was held at Wincanton Racecourse.

During World War II, racing was postponed and the racecourse was used as a military base.

At the end of the war, Wincanton Racecourse was put up for sale and it was purchased by ten National Hunt racers.

In October 1945, the first post-war meeting was held.

In 1966, Wincanton Racecourse changed hands again and this time it was purchased by the Racecourse Holdings Trust.

In 2001, the Racecourse Holdings Trust invested heavily in the facilities at the racecourse which today attracts top equestrians from all over the country.
